In a direct initiative to boost regional livestock productivity and strengthen local agribusiness capacity, Ross Breeders Zambia conducted an intensive technical poultry seminar dedicated to broiler production in Mongu, Western Province on 7th October 2026.
The training session brought together emerging and established broiler farmers from across Mongu and surrounding districts to equip them with practical skills in modern poultry management, housing design, and disease prevention.
The Poultry Association of Zambia (PAZ) has warmly commended Ross Breeders Zambia for hosting this capacity-building initiative in Western Province. PAZ expressed deep appreciation for such gestures from industry partners, highlighting that private-sector technical support and extension services are vital for raising production standards, enhancing biosecurity awareness, and driving sustainable growth among smallholder and commercial poultry farmers across the country.
Key Focus Areas of the Seminar
Facilitated by technical specialists from Ross Breeders, the capacity-building session focused on three foundational pillars necessary for high-yield broiler operations:
1. Optimal Housing & Environmental Management
Participants were guided through the critical principles of poultry house construction tailored to Western Province’s climatic conditions. Key topics included:
• Proper house orientation to maximize natural ventilation and airflow.
• Stocking density management to prevent overcrowding and heat stress.
• Temperature and humidity regulation during early brooding and grow-out phases.
2. Robust Biosecurity Protocols
Recognizing disease prevention as the single most effective safeguard for farm profitability, the workshop emphasized:
• Strict access control measures for vehicles, visitors, and farm personnel.
• Effective footbath installation, sanitation routines, and disinfection of equipment.
• Litter management techniques to minimize ammonia build-up and reduce pathogen load.
3. General Broiler Flock Management
To ensure farmers achieve optimal Feed Conversion Ratios (FCR) and target market weights within the 35-to-42-day cycle, the training detailed:
• Precision brooding protocols during the vital first 7 days of a chick’s life.
• Clean, unrestricted water supply and optimal feed placement.
• Routine health monitoring and vaccination schedules.
Driving Sustainable Growth in Western Province
As demand for high-quality table meat continues to rise across regional markets, local capacity building remains essential. By bridging technical knowledge gaps, technical engagements like this ensure smallholder and commercial farmers can minimize mortality rates, lower production costs, and maximize margins.
Ross Breeders’ outreach in Mongu highlights the growing momentum behind decentralized agricultural extension, empowering farmers with the tools and technical know-how needed to run profitable, resilient poultry businesses.
